Semper: Dan Newberry Trio

  • The Gallimaufry 26-28 Gloucester Road Bristol, England, BS7 8AL United Kingdom (map)

After a mind-bending display of saxophonical majesty in February’s improvised saxophone showdown, Dan will triumphantly further mark his territory at the Gallimaufry by playing funk in his fantastic trio. Expect to hear originals and some covers from the like of Maceo Parker and Kenny Garrett.

Welsh native *Dan Newberry* (tenor saxophone) has entertained Bristol crowds regularly at The Old Duke and St George's, while also making his mark further afield with performances at venues like Ronnie Scott’s, the Royal Albert Hall and the Rainbow Room (New York City). With an impressive CV of past collaborators including Dennis Rollins and Jeremy Stacey, his current trio is a testament to his skill at selecting the most elite co-musicians.

*Ian Matthews* is an English musician, best known as the drummer for the rock band Kasabian. Prior to Kasabian, Matthews played with a number of noted local Bristol bands, such as K-Passa, CCQ, and Sissi. Starting his career as a young club and jazz drummer, Ian then went on to joining Al Murray, Keith Keough, Stuart Warmington, and Al Kitching to found the British Drum Company in 2015. When he is not touring or recording with Kasabian, Ian enjoys playing jazz gigs around his hometown of Bristol.

*Nick Kacal* is a bassist originally from Trinidad, but has roots in London and a presence on the Manchester but now residing in South Wales. After studying with Tony Hougham, the principle bass of the Covent Garden Opera, he moved to London and has played as a sideman on the scene playing predominantly jazz and acoustic folk, occasionally touring to places such as Cape Verde, France and Spain. He formed his own group, Guerillasound, releasing a CD in 2008 and touring successfully in Japan.
